Thank-You Note Wording After a Party

Thank-you note wording after a party: examples for gifts, money, group presents and help, notes from kids and guests, and when to send them.

    Invite Jam Team•Published: October 20, 2026

A thank-you note after a party only needs a few sentences, but the right few. Name the person, mention the gift or help, say what it meant, and close warmly. Here are examples for gifts, money, group presents and help, notes from kids and from guests to the host, and when to send them.

How to write a thank-you note

    1. Greet the person by name. “Dear Aunt Ruth,” or “Hi Sam,”
    2. Thank them for something specific. Name the gift, the help or the visit.
    3. Say what it meant or how you will use it. This is what makes the note personal.
    4. Mention the party. A line about seeing them or a moment you enjoyed.
    5. Close warmly. “With love,” “Thanks again,” or “See you soon.”

    When to send thank-you notes

Send notes for a birthday, shower or dinner party within one to two weeks. For a wedding, aim for within about three months. A late note is still better than no note, so send it even if the date has passed.

    Thank-you notes for a gift

    • “Dear Aunt Ruth, thank you so much for the cookbook. I have already made the lemon cake twice. It was lovely to see you at the party. With love, Nina.”
    • “Hi Sam, thank you for the speaker. It is already on the kitchen shelf, playing far too loudly. Thanks for coming to celebrate with us.”
    • “Dear Mr. and Mrs. Green, thank you for the beautiful vase. The flowers from the party are in it now and it looks perfect on our table.”

Thank-you notes for money or a gift card

Do not mention the amount. Instead, say how you plan to use it.

    • “Dear Grandpa, thank you for your generous birthday gift. I am putting it toward a new bike, and I will send you a photo when I get it.”
    • “Dear Elena, thank you for the gift card. We are saving it for a dinner out once the baby arrives. It was so kind of you.”

Thank-you notes for a group gift

Send one note to the group, or a short note to each person if you know who took part.

    • “To everyone at the office, thank you for the gift card and the lovely card. I was so touched that you all signed it. Cake is on me next week.”
    • “Dear book club, thank you for the beautiful necklace. I wore it to dinner the next night and thought of you all.”

Thank-you notes for coming to the party

Some guests bring no gift, and some events ask for none. A short note to thank them for coming is still a kind touch.

    • “Thank you for coming to my 40th. It meant a lot to have everyone there, and I am still laughing about the speeches.”
    • “Thanks for making the trip for our anniversary party. Having you there made the evening.”

Thank-you notes for help with the party

    • “Dear Clara, thank you for hosting such a beautiful baby shower. The food, the games and the flowers were perfect. I felt very loved.”
    • “Jamie, thank you for running the barbecue all afternoon. The party would not have worked without you.”
    • “Thank you for staying late to help clean up. You are a true friend.”

    Thank-you notes from kids

Young children can add a drawing or their name, and older children can write a sentence or two themselves. Keep it short.

    • “Dear Max, thank you for the dinosaur book. I liked the T. rex page best. Thank you for coming to my party. From Felix.”
    • “Dear Lily, thanks for the art set. I have already painted three pictures. I hope you had fun at my party. Love, Zara.”

For planning the rest of a children’s party, see our guide to how to plan a kids’ birthday party.

Thank-you notes from a guest to the host

Guests can thank the host too, especially after a dinner party or a weekend stay.

    • “Thank you for a wonderful dinner on Saturday. The risotto was delicious and the company was even better.”
    • “Thank you for having us for the weekend. We loved the long walks and the late-night card games.”

Keep a gift list during the party

Write the giver’s name on each gift tag or card as presents are opened, or add them to your guest list. Our guide to how to make a guest list includes a gifts column for this.

    Handwritten or digital thank-you notes

A handwritten card is still the traditional choice for weddings and for older relatives. For most parties, a digital card is perfectly polite and arrives the same day. You can send a designed note with digital thank-you cards, which let you add your own message and share it by link.

Pick a design, write your message and share it with a link.
